Waking Up to Natural Energy Drinks

A Healthy Jolt for The Mind & Body

The Skinny:

Everyone knows the names: Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, and 5-Hour Energy, among others. They are all part of the $50 billion global markets for energy drinks and expected to grow to more than $100 billion in less than a decade. WellWell is not slamming these commercial drinks, although their unpleasant and potentially harmful side effects are well-documented. The high sugar and caffeine levels in many of these drinks can increase heart rates, high blood pressure, insomnia, dehydration and restlessness.  Natural alternatives provide a boost while cutting back on caffeine and sugar. Are they equivalent to a can of Red Bull or Monster? That’s up for debate. If not, perhaps the tradeoff makes the less-sizeable jolt worth it. Read on.

The Slate:

Matcha Green Tea

Matcha comes in a powder form made from green tea leaves containing L-Theanine and a little dollop of caffeine. The recipe is simple. Mix the powder with boiling water and perhaps some organic maple syrup. It is reputed to give a gentle energy boost.

Kombucha

This sparkling fizzy drink is already well known and has lots of commercial options on the market. It can also be homemade.  Either way, it is made from fermented black tea and is sought after for its probiotics, among other health benefits, like providing an energy boost.

Coconut Water

Another option with lots of retail offerings, coconut water is reported to boost energy thanks to its abundance of minerals, like potassium. Young Thai coconuts are one of the best sources of pure water. Store-bought options may also be good, but many have significant amounts of added sugar.

Pineapple-Carrot-Turmeric Spritzer

Looking to concoct an at-home energy drink? This mix is a good option because of the bromelain enzyme in pineapples. The other ingredients help build a tasty and refreshing drink that is also hormone-balancing and anti-inflammatory.

Apple-Banana Energy Shake

Another homemade option for boosting energy includes this apple-banana mix. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and natural sugars. Adding in peanut butter not only provides healthy fats and proteins, but also helps ward off hunger, balance blood sugar and store energy for later use.

Wheatgrass Juice

This all-natural drink is full of minerals, vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties. The combined impact provides a natural energy boost. Don’t worry if there isn’t a juice bar nearby. Wheatgrass powder is readily available. Just mix it with water, and your energy drink is at hand.

Beet Juice

Maybe beets can be beaten when it comes to their health properties.  They have lots of antioxidants and other benefits. The body naturally converts beets inherent nitrites into nitric oxide, which builds blood flow, energy and endurance. Beet juice is a great alternative to store-bought energy drinks.
