Home Remedies To Stop Heartburn Naturally

Aloe Juice To Baking Soda Can Work

Natural Heartburn Remedies

The Skinny:

The first thing to know about heartburn is that it has nothing to do with the heart. It does impact 20 percent of Americans and Europeans—one in five. The bitter, acidic taste in the mouth and burning sensation in the throat and chest happen when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. Also known as acid reflux, it can result in vomiting, flatulence, belching, nausea and difficulty swallowing. Many things can bring about heartburn, from medication to a medical condition, diet, overeating, lying down too quickly, smoking, stress, anxiety and being overweight. Trigger foods, such as caffeine, carbonated drinks, alcohol and tomato products, can cause it. Regardless of what brings it on, it can last minutes or hours. Fortunately, there are several home remedies for heartburn—and WellWell has rounded them up. Read on for some natural heartburn remedies.

The Slate:

Baking Soda

Inexpensive and widely accessible, baking soda is a great way to tackle heartburn. Just 1/2 tsp. of baking soda dissolved in four ounces of a glass of water provides instant relief. One note, baking soda contains lots of sodium, which means it might not be wise for those with hypertension.

Aloe Juice

Aloe does more than soothe the skin;  its juice can also help soothe esophageal irritation from acid reflux. The treatment requires a half-cup of aloe juice before meals or when symptoms arise. It is safe and natural.

Sugar-Free Gum

Saliva eases heartburn by diluting stomach acid. Since chewing gum generates saliva, it can help reduce stomach acidity and prevent acid reflux. Researchers have reported that chewing gum is particularly helpful in people who have eaten large meals or fat-heavy foods that trigger stomach acid. Use sugarless gum, preferably.

Apple Cider Vinegar

There is mixed evidence over whether apple cider vinegar helps beat back heartburn. Some believe it may not work at all, depending on the cause of the acid reflux. Many, however, do, though the vinegar should be significantly diluted, and those with ulcers should avoid the treatment altogether.

Bananas

Ripe bananas beat back heartburn. The tricky part is that unripe or over-ripened bananas may heighten heartburn. The key is to pick bananas wisely.

See A Doctor

Sometimes heartburn can disguise a heart attack. Those experiencing severe chest pains or pressure, pain in arms or jaws, or difficulty breathing could be experiencing a heart attack. If symptoms persist or are severe, see a doctor immediately.
